Keeping Tabs

In the midst of all this upheaval, I'm also trying to get back on the writing wagon. It's both harder and easier than what's in my head. This week, I've been laid low by a chest cold, but still want to stick with things, so here's a little bit of background on what else has been going on with me.I use Firefox, came over to it from Opera, and the two things I got hooked on with Opera were gestures and tabbed browsing. Tabbed browsing is how my brain works, "Oh, I'll set that aside and come back to it later!" Thing is, later never came, I just kept piling up tabs until I crashed Firefox. Repeatedly. I'd lose my stash of tabs, but within a few days, I had amassed another collection, and it would keep growing until the next crash. It could be seen as an issue with the browser, sure, but I have no idea if they ever tested that puppy with as many tabs as I would leave open. It was kinda heroic.Over a year ago, I started weeding through my open tabs. Started folders in my bookmarks, A place to visit? Goes in the travel file. Recipe? In the food file. Essays? In the reading file, and so on. It took me about a week to make it through the open tabs. Yes, I did get distracted a few times "Oh, wait, I wanted to read this...!" And not everything made it into the files, some things I could read and simply close because I was done with them. But one night, after about a week of this, I was preparing to shut my machine down and looked at my browser. There was only one tab open. I was done reading the page, so I closed it. The next morning, I started my machine and opened my browser. It went to a start page. There was no lingering reading or browsing from the night before. A clean slate, as it were. It was a weird feeling.DSC_7171Since then, I've tried to maintain a practice of closing all of my open tabs every night. Honestly, it's one of the harder habits I've established. It doesn't make as much of a difference to me in the evenings so much as it does the next morning. When I open the browser and I've got nothing hanging over my head, no matter how theoretically pleasurable, it's easier to jump into my day. Is it easy? Hell no. Do I stick with it and file those tabs away when they pile up? Yeah. Because I've figured out that it helps me. And that's what it's all about. In the meantime, anybody got any good recommendations for a homepage?
